President Karzai first victory for his newly formed rag-tag army was defending the town, Tarin Kowt. Said to be the heart of the Taliban. With the help of a small group of our Special Forces, they defended their town, turned back the Taliban.
The Taliban surrendered Kandahar, December 7, 2001. Pashtun have ruled Afghanistan. Pushtu are the Taliban. President Karzai is Pashtun. Sixty percent Afghanies are Pushtu. A tribal people, and each of their tribe kept a weapons cache. Those fighters, memorialized in their art are called, Lashkar. Men that enjoy fighting, dying are called Lash.
Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (aka Lashkar-e-Taiba) were built by Pakistan's encouragement. They have not joined the Taliban. At one time, it was thought their joining the Taliban would bring down Pakistan and most of the region. Other Lashkar segments of tribes have joined up with Taliban as fighters. Once, their income source was poppy. Like drug dealers everywhere, their biggest mistake, seeking supply chain dominance. This has brought internal fighting. They use Pakistan bombings as a mark of power. Top rivals kill off one another, those left blow up a marketplace, blame America. That marketplace may be in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran...
President Karzai threads the needle. In 2001, most were sure he had what it took to unite Afghanistan. He too was a Lashkar. Today, he is a dad, and can become the father of a new Afghanistan. His big problems include, those Lashkars fighting with the Taliban that will not lay down their weapons, Vast amount of cash that leave Afghanistan, Using war to keep huge cash flowing (some stays). Had the Warlords kept their cash in Afghanistan, they would use their banks for investment. Commerce would thrive, eventually. Government would have an income. Lashkars would return their weapons.
The Taliban and al Qaida would live off poppy income in the tribal Pakistan's tribal areas.
